Back from IIUG/IDUG NA...
Posted by Jean Georges Perrin (jgp) @ 02:29 AM ET | May 14, 2007

Well, as you know, IT projects do not go always right. It’s the same for Blogs.

I am back home, from a nice vacation in central California. We hit San Francisco, stayed on Fisherman’s Wharf, drove to Sacramento, the Yosemite (in a snow storm) and finally San José. Why am I telling all this?

Simply, because Kim Moutsos, our dear Editor, invited me to continue my conference postcards as a blog on the new db2mag.com. It was a fun idea, so I joined.

Unfortunately they (read: CMP) were a little late (kind of IT project), so I started even later. So I’ll reverse order my blog to the conference.

Thursday, May 10 - Final day in San José.

I love the place. California is a great place, being in the US is always exciting. San José is in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is inspirational by nature. What our industry is now is coming from this unique place on Earth and despite what a lot of people thinks, what our industry will become, comes mainly from here.

This morning, I had the honor to be on the Expert Panel for IIUG. I felt lonely for most of the session. My “expertise”, if any grants it to me, is mainly in the application development, in the software life cycle, at very large. Being in front of a bunch of DBAs which problems where mainly to make IDS (Informix Dynamic Server) even faster, disturbed me. I could finally speak when it came to the matter of IIUG. I guess we’ll have to do a panel for developers at the next conference.

I then had my EJB3 session. It is a very complex subject to cover in an hour. I hope I did well; I’ll share my marks & comments. My session was not very well attended, but that’s what’s happening when you are playing against John Miller III, Jonathan Leffler and Scott Picket at the same time. All my fault. I switched my session with Gary Ben-Israel to leave a little earlier (no comment on that!)...

It was time for good bye, I tried to find most of the people I know, to say good bye, thanks and wish them farewell.

On our way to the airport, we took the famous 101 North, saw all this activity going on, like the new headquarter for eBay and Paypal under construction, but not only: Intel, Sun, McAfee, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle (of course) and more. We made a detour through Stanford University to challenge our sons. It was time to take our jumbo jet, a 747-400 from Air France, to bring us back home.
