DB2 Magazine is now IBM Database Magazine

Later today, you'll notice that DB2mag.com is redirecting to ibmdatabasemag.com, and print subscribers will soon get IBM Database Magazine in the mail. What's going on?

In short, DB2 Magazine has been renamed to more accurately reflect the content.

Since DB2 Magazine launched in 1996, IBM’s Information Management portfolio has grown organically and through nearly 30 acquisitions to cover a full spectrum of Information On Demand capabilities. And it now includes several families of database management software (DB2, Informix, IMS, and UniVerse and UniData). In print and online, we regularly cover news about all of this software and related technologies and will continue to do so. Columnists Stuart Litel and Lester Knutsen joined our ranks a few years ago to provide news and technical tips for the Informix community.

Yet for newcomers, the breadth of the magazine’s coverage wasn’t obvious. It seemed to be a magazine about DB2, period. The new name describes what's inside: DB2, yes, and Informix, and more.

Browse through the new issue and you'll find many familiar elements. DB2 readers will still find favorite DB2 columnists and topics: deep dives into DB2 technology, concepts, and programming with Robert Catterall, Roger Sanders, and Bonnie Baker (though she's on hiatus this issue, she'll have another great Programmers Only column in the Issue 2). Informix readers will still have Informix DBA and International Informix Users Group column, plus occasional features and online companion articles. Guest bloggers and wiki contributors for both data servers continue the coverage online.

This issue also includes coverage of topics that resonate regardless of which data server you’re using. For example, there's an article on IBM Data Studio, a new approach to managing data that works with DB2 and Informix (and even, eventually, non-IBM platforms). IBM’s Deb Jenson gives some universal advice about data governance tools and best practices along with some specifics for DB2 and Informix.

What do you think about the new name and the contents of the new issue? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Comment below.
