A Web 2.0 Expo debate: creativity vs. control in the enterprise
Posted by Kim Moutsos @ 12:47 AM ET | Apr 23, 2008

Forrester Research is projecting that companies will spend nearly $5 billion on Web 2.0 technologies like mashups, wikis, widgets, and so on in the next five years. That explains the tremendous energy around the Web 2.0 Expo underway in San Francisco this week.

Tomorrow Anant Jhingran, CTO of Information Management, and RedMonk analyst Stephen O'Grady face off over the challenges of bringing Web 2.0 technologies into the enterprise in a session called "Creativity vs. Control: The Debate Continues—Can Enterprises Have Both?"

I happened to chat a bit about this related post with Stephen at a luncheon at the Information On Demand conference in Las Vegas last year. IBM's Info 2.0 initiative had recently been announced, and O'Grady told me he questioned users' willingness to accept the kinds of controls IBM was talking about building into the product and mentioned that too much control has a stifling effect.

Certainly Web 2.0 is coming to enterprises whether IT departments want it to or not (as I wrote last year); in fact, many of the technologies are already in use at many companies. Yet, there's a wariness about enterprise adoption of Web 2.0 technologies. Control of corporate data has got to be one of the big concerns.

The Web 2.0 Expo session is moderated by Lauren Cooney, who works with Anant Jhingran at IBM and blogs pretty regularly about Info 2.0 and other topics (check out her story about her first trip to China for a little diversion). With any luck, she'll share a recap of the discussion.

Will providing sanctioned technologies (to create mashups, for example) with built-in governance policies help prevent users from taking data into their own hands (and tools)? I'm curious what you're seeing at your companies. Speak up about what's happening now and what you think is on the horizon in the comments section.
