Database Management Systems
by Raghu Ramakrishnan, Johannes Gehrke

"This is an excellent database management systems textbook, covering E-R diagrams, normalization, indexing, concurrency, locking, crash recovery, query optimization, performance, Internet databases, data warehousing, etc. DB2 (and other DBMS's) are mentioned throughout the text, and the ARIES recovery algorithm (used for logging and recovery in DB2) is presented in detail. The book is well-written, with a nice balance between theory and practice. The 3rd edition has just been released (copyright 2003)."
