WEB-EXCLUSIVE Q&A
Everyone who
works with databases knows that size is an issue.
Database growth is outstripping the expectations (and sometimes the
resources) of even the best planners. Just how much has database size
increased since 1995? Who better to ask then very large database (VLDB)
expert Richard Winter, whose annual Winter Corp. survey uncovers the
largest production databases around? Winter gives some surprising
answers and predictions for the future in an online interview at
http://www.db2mag.com/db_area/archives/2002/q1/winter2.shtml
.
And don't miss Winter's new article "Playing Every Tune: Federated
Databases," now online at

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK
DB2mag.com unveils a new design and new features this week, just in
time for the arrival of the Quarter 1, 2002 issue
(
http://www.db2mag.com
).
When you stop
by to read the new articles
on clustered databases, InfiniBand technology, Web services, and more,
you'll probably notice the new look. And you may want to try the new
instant poll to find out how your experiences with DB2 certification
stack up against those of your fellow DB2 pros. But as you navigate
the site, you'll find much more to like, including:
- A technical resource area that includes Q&As with DB2 Magazine
authors, plus links to IBM resources, newsgroups, and user groups
(
http://www.db2mag.com/tips
)
- A skills and education corner that features the new IDUG Insight and
Certification Strategies columns from DB2 Magazine, plus IBM
certification information, and conference and event listings
(
http://www.db2mag.com/education
)
- More ways to browse article content, including by issue and by topic
- Easier navigation.
Of course, not everything has changed. You'll still find the latest
from your favorite columnists, including Bonnie
Baker
(
http://www.db2mag.com/db_area/archives/2002/q1/programmers.shtml
),
Robert Catterall
(
http://www.db2mag.com/db_area/archives/2002/q1/db2dba.shtml
),
and Michael S. Dougherty
(
http://www.db2mag.com/db_area/archives/2002/q1/webdev.shtml
),
plus online only content that expands the print magazine's coverage.
Don't forget to visit the career
center to browse the latest DB2 job
postings (
http://career.db2mag.com
).
Take a moment to let us know what you think of the new look by using
the site's feedback form (

) or by
sending an email to Kim Moutsos, DB2 Magazine editor, at
kmoutsos@cmp.com
.
ASKED & ANSWERED
Where can I find an example of using stored procedures with DB2 and
JDBC? We currently
use all JDBC and have some long running queries,
and I would like to run a test by converting these to a stored
procedure.

IBM NEWS
IBM and DB2 Find Favor with the Judges
DB2 helped IBM to a happy new year, playing a role in three nods from
media organizations. VARBusiness - noting DB2, Informix, and WebSphere -
named IBM as one of the 10 stories that shaped the face of
software in 2001
(
http://www.varbusiness.com/sections/news/breakingnews.asp?articleid=32169
).
Intelligent Enterprise, owned by DB2 Magazine publisher CMP Media,
awarded IBM the top spot in the magazine's annual ranking of the
top 12 IT solution providers involved in "the development of
intelligent enterprises"
(
http://www.intelligententerprise.com/020101/dozen/dozen_pr.shtml
). At
the Information Management 2001 (IM2001) Awards, held by the Elan
Conferences (with Cambridge Technology Partners, Database Marketing
Magazine, Chartered Institute of Marketing, IBM GBIS, and
Computer Business Review Magazine), two projects using IBM as
Principal Software Partner received winner or finalist status
(
http://www.elanconf.co.uk/im2001winners.shtml
). The
Boots Co.'s
Advantage Card Customer Database project won the CRM Project category
and took finalist in the Business Intelligence category. The solution
uses DB2 UDB EEE for AIX and DB2 Intelligent Miner. Garanti Bank's
Management Reporting Project, which uses DB2 UDB and IBM Intelligent Miner
for Data, was a finalist in the same two categories.

Common Warehouse Metamodel: An Introduction to the Standard for
Data
Warehouse Integration, by John Poole, Dan Change, Douglas Tolbert,
