1. THE AUTOMATED FUTURE
IBM wants automation and self-management in DB2 to take some of the
performance burden off DBAs. But if performance and tuning is
no
longer the heart of the DBA's role, what will be? DB2 Magazine asked
several industry experts to voice their opinion about whether DBAs
will be needed at all and, if so, for what. The article "
Where Do You
Want to Go Next?
" summarizes
the experts' views. Now you can read the full interview with
consultant and DBA Howard Fosdick, in which he dishes on how
multimedia and XML projects will impact DBAs and why "techno bigots"
will be left behind

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED
I have some questions about DB2 and Linux:
1. What Linux kernel parameters need to be tuned for DB2 on Red Hat
Linux Professional 7.2, 7.3/Advanced Server 2.1?
2. What files compile DB2 stored procedures on Linux? When I compile a
stored procedure, DB2 generates a package, Pnnnnnnn, but I don't want
a system-generated package name. I want to
name the package myself.

3. IBM NEWS
IBM Acquires Tarian Software
IBM acquired all assets of Canadian records management provider Tarian
Software. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter,
2002. IBM says the Tarian acquisition will let Big Blue address
customers' need to digitize, integrate, and manage information.
Records
management software enables organizations to apply record
retention and disposal policies to electronically stored information.
The software integrates with a company's existing technology
infrastructure, enabling them to apply rules by which organizations
can comply with record retention policies and meet regulatory
requirements. Tarian operations and staff will be integrated in the
IBM's Data Management Software Group. For details, go to

Webinar: IBM DB2 Relational Connect & Crystal Reports
Many companies struggle to develop meaningful reports. Often, data is
stored in separate silos throughout the organization and existing
reporting tools are either unable to amalgamate data from these
multiple sources or are slow and cumbersome. IBM and Crystal Decisions
have teamed up to help solve this problem. Find out how on Dec. 3,
2002 at 9:00 a.m. PST, when Richard Hedges, program
director of IBM
Information Integration Products, and Trevor Smith, group program
manager for business development at Crystal Decisions present "High
speed reporting across multiple data sources with Crystal Reports and
IBM DB2 Relational Connect." For information or to register, go to
