1. IBM NEWS
IBM Announces DB2 Express
IBM demonstrated a new DB2 targeted to business partners and to
customers with 100 to 1,000 employees at IBM PartnerWorld in New
Orleans this week. DB2 Universal Database Express Edition, or DB2
Express, offers transparent
installation and enhanced self-management
features. Although pricing has not been announced, DB2 Express is
expected to cost less than $1,000. The Express edition supports
Windows and Linux on servers with up to two processors, and can be
pre-configured in offerings for key vertical markets such as finance,
insurance, and retail.

IBM DB2 Information Integrator Now in Beta
IBM announced the first products based on IBM's Xperanto project
earlier this month. DB2 Information Integrator and DB2 Information
Integrator for Content, both in beta, let businesses access and
integrate both structured and unstructured information as if it were
stored in one place. DB2 Information Integrator is tailored to
SQL-based developers, and DB2 Information Integrator for Content
supports a content management-programming model. Both offerings
provide federated access to structured and unstructured
data.

Wladawsky-Berger, Selinger Webcasts Address IBM Tech Topics
A new series of Webcasts for IBM partners and partner prospects
debuted in February with a presentation by Steve Mills, senior vice
president and group executive of the IBM Software Group. The Webcast
series, called IBM Insight Exchange, divides topics into an
"Opportunity Track," which
focuses on industry trends and a
"Technology Track," which covers technological excellence and
technology investments. To kick off the technology series, IBM's
Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of technology, will explain
the e-business on-demand technologies and business model in a Feb. 21
Webcast. Pat Selinger, vice president of data management architecture
and technology at IBM, will discuss research and development efforts
aimed at managing the data of the future on March 5. The series
schedule
and links to replays of the Webcasts are available at:

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED
Does DASD striping work with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390? After
discussions with IBM reps, my company decided to use it in some of our
large flat files. I thought it would benefit the load and unload
utilities and cursors that pull in large volumes of data. What are
your thoughts? Find out what

Services, designed to create closer partnerships between customers and
the IBM Data Management Customer Support team. An add-on to Passport
Advantage, Regency Premier Services customers are

Account Manager who understands both IBM software and the customer's
particular support needs.

4. DB2 TRIVIA CONTEST
If you read the Q1 issue of DB2 Magazine, you probably know the answer
to this month's DB2 Trivia question: Which data management pioneer is
credited with developing DB2's cost-based optimizer? Don't know? It
might be worth your while to reread the article "Bound to
Succeed," by
David Stodder. A correct answer earns the chance to enter a drawing
for a $100 American Express Gift Cheque.
