1. IBM NEWS
IBM Announces DB2 Content Manager V.8.2 and DB2 Records Manager V.2.1
Upgrades to IBM's DB2 Content Manager and DB2 Records Manager products
announced this week include several ease-of-use and integration
enhancements. Both are newly branded as DB2 products, reflecting the
role the DBMS plays under the covers. DB2 Content Manager v.8.2
includes enhanced integration with Siebel
and PeopleSoft and new
replication support for managing objects in multiple locations. DB2
Records Manager v.2.1 features a new physical records central console,
an improved Records Administrative Client, context sensitive help, and
DB2 UDB support.

Janet Perna to Address Information on Demand at AIIM 2003
IBM general manager for Data Management Solutions Janet Perna will
give a
keynote address at the AIIM 2003 conference in New York City on
April 8. Her talk will cover how content management technology can
help organizations manage and integrate all forms of information,
including scanned images, audio, and video, and link it to core
business processes.

DB2 UDB .Net-Enablement Beta Program Begins
Any programmers interested in developing applications that use the
Microsoft .NET Framework to
access DB2 UDB can participate in the DB2
UDB .Net-enablement beta program. A newsgroup facilitates interaction
among beta participants and the DB2 development team, and a "Check for
Updates" facility provides a home for any new information or beta code
updates.

DB2 UDB Aces Cost of Ownership Study
A recent study from Market Magic Research Ltd. (MMR) found
that DB2
provides a better cost of ownership than competitive products from
Oracle and Microsoft. The study focuses on three application
scenarios: an off-the-shelf application (such as SAP or PeopleSoft), a
custom built Web-deployed application, and a business intelligence or
data warehouse implementation. In all three scenarios, DB2 provided
the lowest cost over a five-year period.

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED
Is there any reason to change the default memory optimization setting
on Windows 2000 Server from "Maximize data throughput for file
sharing" to "Maximize data throughput for network operations" when you
have already instructed DB2 to avoid file caching by setting the DB2
registry variable DB2NTNOCACHE to ON? DB2 consultant Chris Fierros
explains.

5. AT THE BOOKSTORE
Designing Data-Intensive Web Applications
by Stefano Ceri, Piero Fraternali, Aldo Bongio, Marco Brambilla, Sara
Comai, Maristella Matera
Scores of database management systems across the
Internet access and
maintain large amounts of structured data for e-commerce, online
trading, banking, digital libraries, and other high-volume sites.
Developing and maintaining these data-intensive applications is an
especially complex, multidisciplinary activity, requiring all the
tools and techniques that software engineering can provide. These
internationally known database researchers present a methodology that
exploits the conceptual modeling approach to software engineering. The
book includes the
methodology and a development process and notation
optimized for high-volume Web applications.
