1. DB2 MAGAZINE QUARTER 2, 2003: THE NEW BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
Information is getting a lot of action these days — at least it soon will be. In fact, the switch from passive to active repositories of information is one of the key notions behind an emerging new approach to business intelligence (BI), according to author and consultant Michael Gonzales. Gonzales's piece on the new features coming to DB2 that will make the database more aware of online analytic processing — resulting in faster and better support for a range of BI tools — is one of the articles in this issue that sheds light on the new technologies emerging to meet changing BI needs.

2. REMEMBERING EDGAR F. (TED) CODD, INVENTOR OF THE RELATIONAL MODEL
Relational database pioneer Edgar F. Codd died Friday in Williams Island, Fla. He was 79. Codd's 1970 paper "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks" launched the relational database industry. When the Association for Computing Machinery (www.acm.org) gave Codd its prestigious A.M. Turing Award in 1981, the citation credited Codd's work for providing "the impetus for widespread research into numerous related areas, including database languages, query subsystems, database semantics, locking and recovery, and inferential subsystems." You can read more about Codd's achievements in articles published April 20 in The Miami Herald and the San Jose Mercury News

4. FREE NETSEMINAR: NOT EITHER/OR, BUT BOTH: JAVA, .NET, AND THE PATH TO DATA INTEROPERABILITY
Intelligent Enterprise magazine hosts this free, interactive seminar on the impact that heated competition between Java and Microsoft's .Net environments will have on the software developers, IT architects, and database managers who must figure out how to support both. Panelists from Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and other companies will cover critical issues in data connectivity, integration, and interoperability.
