QUARTER 2, 2003: THE NEW BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
Information is getting a lot of action these days at least it soon
will be. In fact, the switch from passive to active repositories of
information is one of the key notions behind an emerging new approach
to business intelligence (BI), according to author and consultant
Michael Gonzales. Gonzales's piece on the new features coming to DB2
that will make the database more aware of online analytic processing
resulting in faster and better
support for a range of BI tools
is one of the articles in this issue that sheds light on the new
technologies emerging to meet changing BI needs.

Other highlights of the issue include:
* Solving the Data Warehouse Puzzle, which explains how federation
technology can help businesses meet new needs by extending their
existing data warehouses

2. REMEMBERING EDGAR F. (TED) CODD, INVENTOR OF THE
RELATIONAL MODEL
Relational database pioneer Edgar F. Codd died Friday in Williams
Island, Fla. He was 79. Codd's 1970 paper "A Relational Model of Data
for Large Shared Data Banks" launched the relational database
industry. When the Association for Computing Machinery (www.acm.org)
gave Codd its prestigious A.M. Turing Award in 1981, the citation
credited Codd's work for providing "the impetus for widespread
research into numerous related areas, including database languages,
query subsystems, database
semantics, locking and recovery, and
inferential subsystems." You can read more about Codd's achievements

Mercury News

3. DB2 MAGAZINE TRIVIA CONTEST
Do you know which IBM product provided the core code base for DB2
Universal Database for Unix, Windows, and OS/2? A correct answer means
a chance to win a $100 American Express Gift Cheque.
http://www.db2mag.com/
Not sure you know the answer? DB2 Magazine editorial director Dave
Stodder's interview with IBM Toronto Lab's Berni Schiefer should help

4. FREE NETSEMINAR: NOT EITHER/OR, BUT BOTH: JAVA, .NET, AND THE PATH TO DATA INTEROPERABILITY
Intelligent Enterprise magazine hosts this free, interactive seminar
on the impact that heated competition between Java and Microsoft's
.Net environments will have on the software developers, IT architects,
and database managers who must figure out how to support both.
Panelists from Microsoft, Sun
Microsystems, and other companies will
cover critical issues in data connectivity, integration, and
interoperability.

6. AT THE BOOKSTORE
IBM Data Warehousing With IBM Business Intelligence Tools
by Michael L. Gonzales
In IBM Data Warehousing, Michael Gonzales shows how to exploit IBM
technologies to get the most from data warehouse investments. These
technologies include everything from SMP and MPP technical
architectures to DB2 UDB and DB2 OLAP Server. Gonzales, a DB2 Magazine
contributor, provides an in-depth look at the BI fundamentals and
architecture, data management, and
enhanced analytics, plus tips,
tricks, and workarounds for maximum performance. Key topics include
DB2 features that support BI and data warehousing; IBM technologies
for managing warehouses; project management techniques for
prioritizing BI iterations and reducing risk; and OLAP, data mining,
and spatial analysis. A companion Web site provides links to vendors,
technical notes, and other reference material.
