1. NOW ONLINE: DB2 MAGAZINE QUARTER 1, 2005
* Pulling It All Together
IBM has accepted this reality: Companies don't buy all of their software and
hardware from just one vendor. That's why DB2's parent has spent the last
several years developing technologies that erase such distinctions as
content vs. data, XML vs. relational, mainframe vs. distributed, and even
DB2 vs. non-DB2.
Find out how other companies and government agencies are using these
technologies to save time and money.
-- The Right Stuff: IBM's Nelson Mattos explains how customers use
integration technologies for Web searches, grid initiatives,
national security, and more.

-- Taming the Beast: How a federation-based strategy is freeing
Merrill Lynch developers from integration struggles.
http://www.db2mag.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=59300944
-- Security: The Global View: At law enforcement and intelligence
agencies, integrating information is a top priority - and a major
challenge. Federation and other integration technologies can help.
http://www.db2mag.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=59301116
-- Grid Iron: Inherent strength and flexibility are helping grids
gain ground on the business playing field.

* New Favorites, Old Faithfuls
At DB2 Magazine headquarters, we've been doing some information integration
of our own. We've expanded our coverage to make sure that all readers find
exactly what they need to do their jobs better. In the pages of this issue,
you'll find a new column, complete with code samples, devoted to better
application development ("Perls of Wisdom," by IBM's Grant Hutchison and Michael Hoy). Existing columns on content
management and information integration are now joined by one for business
intelligence architects.
A warm welcome goes out to our new Informix readers. Beginning with this
issue, DB2 Magazine will contain regular tips and techniques from Informix
experts, plus news and views from the International Informix Users Group.
You'll also find more coverage of real customers solving real problems with
IBM information management technologies. And, you'll meet information
management professionals who love their jobs (see the new Dream Job column).
But don't worry; we haven't given up any favorites.
You'll still find the ever-popular DB2 DBA, Distributed DBA, and Programmers
Only.
