1. NOW ONLINE: DB2 MAGAZINE Q3, 2005

Businesses need more than data — even more than information — to figure out their best moves. In this pivotal issue of DB2 Magazine, IBM's Janet Perna reveals the first infrastructure to put the power of insight within reach. Other articles in the issue explain how the most advanced infrastructure elements, which IBM calls information services, are helping businesses get the most value from their information, no matter what format it's in or where it resides.

2. IBM NEWS

* Janet Perna to Retire
IBM announced that Janet Perna, general manager of IBM Information Management Software, will retire after 31 years with the company. Perna has been general manager of IBM's information management group since 1996, but her DB2 roots stretch back to the Toronto Lab (where she began building IBM's distributed platform business) and to product development work at the Santa Teresa Lab. During Perna's tenure, her group expanded to include content management, business intelligence, integration, and database tools. Perna was inducted into the Women In Technology International Hall of Fame in 2001 and was recognized by Information Week as one of the top 10 women in IT. Ambuj Goyal, currently general manager of IBM Workplace, Portal, and Collaboration software will replace Perna. Goyal previously led IBM's solutions and strategy group and its application and integration middleware division. He also spent years in IBM research, where his early work in scalable databases led to the development of the DB2 Universal Database family.

* Apache Derby Boosts its Status
The Apache Software Foundation announced the first release of Apache Derby (release 10.1.1.0). Since its graduation from the Apache Incubator, Apache Derby is considered a subproject of the Apache DB project. Derby is a pure Java, standards-based relational database engine (created from code donated by IBM from its Cloudscape product).

* IBM to Acquire DWL IBM signed an agreement to acquire DWL, a privately held company based in Atlanta and Toronto that provides customer data integration middleware. The acquisition strengthens IBM's information management software portfolio, including the company's existing product information management and enterprise data integration software, a key part of the company's On Demand strategy. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions and is expected to close later in 2005.

* IBM Acquires PureEdge Solutions Inc.
IBM completed the acquisition of PureEdge Solutions Inc., a privately held company based in Victoria, BC, Canada. The acquisition gives IBM customers electronic forms (or e-forms) functionality for collaborative solutions. IBM will integrate the newly-acquired e-forms into its portfolio of collaboration technology, including IBM Workplace, WebSphere, and Lotus offerings. The acquisition also complements IBM's content management business. PureEdge is an active supporter of XForms, the open industry standard for electronic forms, and IBM intends to continue that involvement.

* DB2 for Linux Bests Benchmarks IBM announced that an IBM POWER5 processor-based eServer p5 570 running DB2 for Linux set a new record* for online transaction processing performance for 4-processor servers.

3. DB2 MAGAZINE TRIVIA CONTEST

Which recent IBM acquisition provided the technology now known as WebSphere Product Center? If you know, enter the contest for a chance to win a $100 American Express Gift Cheque. (Congratulations to B. Narayanaswamy, winner of the most recent drawing.)
