Memory Matters
Memory is the mother of all wisdom, wrote the Greek playwright Aeschylus. He certainly wasn't writing about database administration when he penned those words more than 2,000 years ago, yet the quote still rings true. A DBA who understands DB2 memory usage can apply that knowledge to successful tuning and troubleshooting efforts. Two contributors share their memory wisdom this month.

Scott Hayes |
Reader Radhesh Kumar contributes this piece on Monitoring and Tuning Memory in DB2 9 for Linux, Unix, and Windows Kumar explains DB2 memory usage in general and introduces DB2 9's self tuning memory manager (STMM), which dynamically tunes DB2 parameters for a specific workload, and other DB2 9 memory features.
The latest blog post by DB2 for LUW performance guru Scott Hayes explores when to use STMM and how to make the most of it in both data warehouse and OLTP scenarios.

Label-Based Access Control in DB2 9
Despite companies' best efforts to keep intruders out of networks and sensitive systems, more than 70 percent of data breaches are carried out by employees. Label-based access control makes it possible to grant and restrict read and write access to individual rows and columns based on an employee's job function, department, or other designated criteria. DB2 guru Roger E. Sanders shows how to implement this important security feature.

IBM to Acquire Cognos
IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cognos, an Ottowa, Canada-based company that sells business intelligence tools for query and reporting, analytics, scorecards, and dashboards. The $5 billion-deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008, subject to Cognos shareholder approval. The Cognos purchase is the 23rd IBM acquisition in support of its Information on Demand strategy. IBM says the acquisition will enable new business insights to be delivered to a broader set of users than business intelligence traditionally reaches. |
